Criteria for Grading and belt promotion:
- Syllabus: Each grade has a stipulated level of technical proficiency to be
achieved. The student should be able to demonstrate the techniques successfully.
- Hours of training: Mastery of the techniques for each level is gained only
with time on the mat. Though normally a minimum number of hours would be required
before progressing to the next level, a student can achieve the grades sooner by
their dedication and willingness to learn quickly.
- Sparring: This tests the student's skills in a simulated fight situation.
The sparring match will be held in a supervised and controlled environment. The
opponents will be selected based on their grade levels.
Stripes or Dans
Each belt from White
to Brown
can receive upto 4 stripes before changing to the next colour.
This provides for a gradual improvement of skills and abilities.
Based on the student's performance the instructor can decide to award the next
colour regardless of any previous stripes held by the student.
The Black Belt
The Black
belt is the ultimate reward which tests the dedication, patience and commitment
of the student.
Compared to other martial arts styles, a BJJ black belt is a long process of development
and maturation. Many years of training and perfecting of skills will be required
before acheiving this rank.
Anyone can achieve a BJJ black belt. Persevere and never give up.
And remember...
“It’s all about the journey, not the outcome.” - Carl Lewis
