Recommendations from your coach

Dear Students,

Ortiz Academy coach I cannot emphasise enough the importance of training in a safe environment. As a instructor the last thing I want is that a student is unable to train due to injury. Even though instructors are available to ensure that injuries are avoided, YOU as a student play the most significant role.

So here go my tips:

  1. Warm up properly with a few standard exercises (not sparring), at least for 15 minutes. Warm ups are the perfect prevention against injuries.
  2. Stretch for at least 2 minutes before warm up and for 10 minutes at the end of the class. Most schools do not spend enough time on stretching exercises. But we shall put that right.
  3. When sparring keep in mind that this is not a competition. Flow and work together using only about 60% of your strength. There should be mutual benefit while training together.
  4. Select the partners for training. Choose people that share the same values of good training. Nothing is worse then having a 110 kilo amateur trying to test you by being reluctant in flow.
  5. If you’re training and you've been tapped or swept, that's good!. Congratulate your opponent. Don't hold any grudges or resentments, instead learn from your mistakes.
  6. Be nice to others especially when sparring with someone older or younger than you. You are not proving anything by pounding or smashing someone who is weaker than you.
  7. Leave your Ego at the door.

By following those recommendations you should have a much better and safer environment for training. Most importantly enjoy your journey. It is a long road to discover. Recently I’ve been reading some books on how to improve faster. So I want to share these ideas with you and give you some valuables tips on how one can progress in BJJ.

Enjoy
